Dreams Left On The Side Of The Road

Why are some dreams left behind on the side of the road of our lives?

They sit there reminding us of what we wished for and did not take action to get them.

You might know why a particular dream did not become a reality for you.

Others of us haven't pinpointed the reason and still feel the guilt or shame of not getting something we said at one time was critical.

Here's what I came up with as I have looked at my dreams left behind:

1. Locus of Control - this is a psychological term used to describe the degree to which we believe we have control over the outcomes of our lives. The degree to which you feel you have control is a learned behaviour.

2. External Circumstances - sometimes things happen we have no control over. The pandemic is an example of something unexpected that had a dramatic effect on our lives.

3. Internal Self-speak - we have all learned how to speak to ourselves using the model of those who taught us. We think we know what is true based on what we learned. To change the narrative, we have to release and let go of the rules we have held onto for all our lives.

4. Change is hard - we have a dream, but we tell ourselves or are told it is hard or impossible. Change can be challenging, and still, we can overcome it if we bring discipline day after day to the process.

5. The Plateau - as we progress toward our dream, we hit a plateau. If this lasts for any length of time, we might give up. Our self-talk kicks in to give us the reasons why there is no point in continuing.

6. Plateau Antidote - have a big reason why you say what you want.

The second antidote is to understand your thoughts light up your brain, which moves you to action. Your choice is to change your thinking.

If you have dreams you have left behind on the side of your road, consider going back and picking them up, looking at them with love, and feeling if you still want them.

If so, gather yourself up and start the journey with earnest, dedication, and self-love.

You will not be disappointed.
